Six Simple Machines

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage  (also called leverage) to multiply force.

What are the 6 Simple Machines

  1. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines which were defined by Renaissance scientists:
    • Lever.
    • Wheel and axle.
    • Pulley.
    • Inclined plane.
    • Wedge.
    • Screw.

Usage

Because work is defined as force acting on an object in the direction of motion,  a machine makes work easier to perform by accomplishing one or more of the following functions:

  • transferring a force from one place to another,
  • changing the direction of a force,
  • increasing the magnitude of a force, or
  • increasing the distance or speed of a force.
